Venetian Plaster Application

USE:

Suitable for interior application on very smooth, coat-able, absorbent surfaces like mineral plaster, concrete, drywalls, and fibrous plaster boards. Unearthed Smooth Lime Plaster may be used first to coat the surface.

Prior to application on your surface, the suitability of this product should be tested on a small, inconspicuous area.

PROPERTIES:

  • Powder to be mixed with water
  • Breathable
  • Easy to use, assuming plastering experience
  • Natural white due to fine marble flour
  • Nearly odorless
  • All ingredients from natural sources
  • Free of preservatives and titanium dioxide
  • Can be tinted with up to 5% of lime resistant pigments

SUITABLE TOOLS:

Quality trowels, such as Unearthed’s Venetian Trowel.

PREPARATION:

Remove surplus of bonding agents or sintering skin mechanically.
Remove loose parts of plaster and other surfaces and repair with similar material.
Striking-through or coloring substances must be blocked before application.

PRIMING:

Slightly dusting and strongly absorbent or differently absorbent surfaces like plaster, drywalls and fibrous plaster boards must be primed with Vega Primer and Unearthed Smooth Lime Plaster.

TINTING:

The plaster can be tinted up to 5% by weight with all Unearthed earth and mineral pigments. If using pigments from another supplier, you must ensure that they are lime resistant.
Stir pigments into the water before mixing the plaster in. Ensure that all clots are stirred out properly. To gradate, stir pigments in little water and add to the already mixed plaster.

TEMPERATURE:

Room temperature during application temperature must be at least 47°F.

MIXING THE PLASTER:

Stir the powder into the required amount of clean, cold water (with pigments mixed in, if tinting is desired) using a powerful electric drill with a paint stirrerIt is important to use a clean bucket with clean water. We find it easiest if you start with half of your water in the bucket and gradually pour in the plaster and remaining water. Once stirred thoroughly, let the product sit for 15-20 minutes, which will allow the product to expand and soak up all of the water. After the expanding time, stir again.

AMOUNT OF WATER:

Add 5 - 6 cups of water to a 2.5kg package or 5.2-6 quarts to a 10kg package.
Adjust product/water mixture to suit the surface; i.e. a little more water may be required for certain applications.

APPLICATION:

Venetian Plaster is applied thinly in two or more layers. The first layer is applied evenly over the entire surface in the desired hue. Wait at least 4 - 6 hours before the next step.

The following layers are applied in quick succession over the entire surface or in the spot-stopping technique.

The last layer should be hard troweled (pressed with trowel swipes at an approx. 20 degree angle) to achieve a gloss finish.

DRYING TIMES:

Dry after approximately 24 hrs.

YIELD:

Approx. 15-20g per sq. ft. for the first layer, and 5-8 grams for subsequent layers. In a typical two layer application, a 2.5kg bag yields up to 100 sq. ft.
