Smooth Lime Plaster Application + Use

Smooth Lime Plaster is used to create smooth, hard surfaces surfaces. Due to the high alkalinity (pH value 13) the plaster inhibits fungus growth, which makes it especially suitable for bathrooms and other humid conditions.

Suitable for application in the interior on coat-able, absorbent surfaces like drywall, mineral plaster, concrete,  and fibrous plaster boards.

Prior to application on your surface, the suitability of this product should be tested on a small, inconspicuous area.

  • Nearly odorless
  • Can be painted over with Lime Paint or venetian plaster

  • Can be tinted with up to 5% of lime resistant pigments

SUITABLE TOOLS:

Quality trowels.

PREPARATIONS:

The surface must be smooth, solid and clean, free of dust, grease and striking-through or coloring substances.

  • Strongly absorbent or differently absorbent surfaces must be primed with Vega Primer.
  • Remove non-coatable surfaces and residues.
  • Brush dusting surfaces thoroughly.
  • Remove surplus of bonding agents or sintering skin mechanically.
  • Remove residues of molding oil on concrete surfaces.
  • Remove loose parts of rabbets and brickwork and repair with similar material.
  • Striking-through or coloring substances must be blocked before application.

MIXING THE PLASTER:

Stir the powder into the required amount of clean, cold water (with pigments mixed in, if tinting is desired) using a powerful electric drill with a paint stirrerIt is important to use a clean bucket with clean water. We find it easiest if you start with half of your water in the bucket and gradually pour in the plaster and remaining water until you achieve a peanut butter like consistency. Once stirred thoroughly, let the product sit for 15-20 minutes, which will allow the product to expand and soak up all of the water. After the expanding time, stir again (stir in Unearthed Mix-Ins if desired now). Satisfactory Mix-In results are typically achieved by adding .5% to 1%, by weight.

AMOUNT OF WATER:

Add 3 - 4 cups of water to a 2.5kg package or 3 quarts to 1 gallon to a 10kg package.

Adjust product/water mixture to suit the surface; i.e. a little more water may be required for a particular application. Keep in mind you will more thank likely add water during the application process as well.

USAGE:

Room temperature during application temperature must beat least 47°F. Apply with trowel, structure as desired. Maximum layer thickness per layer is 2 mm.

In higher elevations the plaster tends to dry out quicker. You may add a little water to make the product workable again. However, don't add too much as the water will push through to the surface as the product is drying and create cracks. A light misting will be enough to make the product workable.

TINTING:

Tint with up to 5% (by weight) of all Unearthed earth and mineral pigments, which are sold separately here.  For example, you would achieve a Subtle (C) color by mixing 100 grams of pigment into 10kg of Smooth Lime Plaster.  The darkest shades would be achieved by 500 grams of pigment and 10kg of Smooth Lime Plaster.

To view the color palette, click here.  Please note that Smooth Lime Plaster may only be tinted with up to 5% pigments only (by weight), which means that only medium B+, B, and C shades are available  (B+=5%, B=3.5%, C=1%).

Customize you plaster wall by adding Muscovite Glimmer or Vermiculite Mix-Ins to Smooth Lime Plaster.

If using pigments from another supplier, you must ensure that they are lime resistant.

Stir pigments into the mixing water before mixing the plaster. Ensure that all clots are stirred out properly. To gradate, stir pigments in little water and add to the already mixed plaster.

DRYING TIMES:

Safe to coat after approximately 24 hrs per mm of layer thickness.

YIELD:

1 kg of powder covers 11 ft² per mm layer thickness on even surfaces. Accurate consumption values to be determined on site.

STORAGE:

If stored dry and above freezing, the powder can be kept for at least 2 years.

DISPOSAL OF UNUSED PLASTER:

Do not dispose of residues in the sewage system. Dried residues can be disposed of with normal household litter, in accordance with all laws and regulations. Please recycle empty containers.
